Vacation or dream job? Why not both?
by Christina Cerio
Book lovers and employment seekers, take note. There’s a hot job on the market that you need to keep an eye on. Hint: It sounds like a paid vacation.
Job title: Barefoot Bookseller. Location: the Maldives.
Job description summary: Live near a luxury resort, have a passion for books, blog about your adventures in the area, spread your love of literature.
What’s not to love?
Curious about living in the Maldives? This quote from their tourism website explains it all:
“Welcome to the Maldives, where sands are as white as the smiles of the locals, where fish swim happily in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, where the weather is a dream, and the deep rays of the sun wait to engulf you in their arms.”
Whoa. How does that sound for a day at the office? The mastermind behind the job search is Philip Blackwell, founder and CEO of Ultimate Library and previous head of British book chain, Blackwells.
Ultimate Library is an organization with a mission to build book collections for hotels and resorts around the world in order to provide travelers with quality books during their travels. The goal is to fill the bookshelf with books people want to read rather than books that match the color scheme. Blackwell believes,
“books should not only compliment the interior decor and look good but also inform, educate and inspire. We call it intelligent luxury.”
After receiving thousands of applications (in just 10 days!) from bibliophiles around the world, Ultimate Library released an apologetic statement explaining they need time to read applications to find the best bookseller for the job. The position has not been filled, but due to a plethora of responses, new applications are currently on hold.
So, stay tuned to discover who will be the next Maldives bookseller. Is it you?
