The 30th Annual Lambda Literary Awards

by

The Thirtieth Annual Lambda Literary Awards were held this past Monday at the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing arts in New York City. Comedian Kate Clinton served as host. Among those awarded were Roxane Gay, Edmund White, Carmen Maria Machado, John Rechy, Barbara Browning, CAConrad, and Rosamond S. King. The list of presenters this year was, as in other years, brimming with notable names: Alison Bechdel (Fun Home), Rebecca Solnit (Men Explain Things to Me), Pamela Sneed (award-winning poet), Kate Bornstein (iconic trans activist and writer), and more.

Highlights from the ceremony included Rick Whitaker introducing Edmund White entirely using sentences from White’s work; Roxane Gay offering in a heartfelt speech, “I want queer writers to create the work that they want to put into the world”; and the final remarks from Tony Valenzuela, who, after nine years as Lambda Literary’s Executive Director, said that “despite our continued challenges, you have a community through Lambda Literary that has your back.” Sue Landers will assume the role going forward.
