Strand to open popup location at Sloan-Kettering

by

The Strand Bookstore will be temporarily setting up shop at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center this weekend, Jessica Silvester writes for New York. The landmark store’s first popup location is a decidedly different approach for an institution that prides itself on its “18 miles of books,” moving in to the MSKCC’s Thrift Shop.

Per the Strand’s website, the popup will focus on vintage books, “ranging from art to cooking to travel to biographies.” And for the opening day, Darren Sutherland — the store’s rare books specialist — will be on site to answer questions and help people find the perfect book to add to their collection. Silvester lists several of the particular items that will be on sale, including “a first edition of Norman Mailer’s The Time of Our Time ($20), an embossed copy of Kurt Vonnegut’s Breakfast of Champions ($300), and a leather-covered edition of Damien Hirst’s first monograph ($1,200)…showcased beside such antiques as a Tiffany-style stained-glass lamp ($350) and a high-back chair with a red velvet seat ($650).”

Some of these items might be a bit too pricey for your everyday book browser, but some of the proceeds of the weekend sale go to benefit Sloan-Kettering and its patient care, research, and education programs. The Strand and Sloan-Kettering also support Visible Ink, a hospital program that pairs patients with writing mentors.

The pop-up location will be open from Thursday, Sep. 19 through Sunday, Sep. 22, at 1440 Third Avenue (by 81st Street) in New York.
