Stephen Colbert presents The Hungry for Power Games
by Taylor Sperry
The 2016 Republication National Convention has officially released its schedule for the coming days—a program capped with the “theme” “Make America One Again” and “headliners” Peter Thiel, Tom Barrack, Ivanka Trump, and Donald Trump—but the stage has already been hijacked by at least one unexpected speaker: Late Show host Stephen Colbert, who snatched the microphone on Sunday evening, while dressed as Caesar Flickerman, the Master of Ceremonies of the Hunger Games in Suzanne Collins’s blockbuster series. (In the film adaptations he’s played by Stanley Tucci.)
For Jezebel, Rachel Vorona Cote reports, “Colbert can be heard announcing, with gravitas, that Trump ‘has formed an alliance with Indiana Governor Mike Pence.’” He goes on to declare, “It is my honor to hereby launch and begin the 2016 National Hungry for Power Games!”
Just before he’s shuffled off the stage by security, Colbert/Caesar says, “Look, I know I’m not supposed to be up here . . . but to be honest, neither is Donald Trump.”
