Diplomat allegedly caught on tape stealing a book

by

Remember when Winona Ryder shoplifted from Saks and was (in my opinion) unjustly ostracized from Hollywood? It appears that diplomacy world has its own Winona scandal brewing—according to AP, the Mexican ambassador to Argentina was allegedly caught on security cameras stealing a book from a Buenos Aires bookstore. However in this case, an ambassador’s entire career is based on honesty and integrity and will face the consequences.

The alleged book thief, Ambassador Óscar Valero Recio Becerr, has been ordered to return to Mexico as officials investigate the theft. AP reports that Mexico’s president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, wants people to reserve their judgment until a proper investigation by the government ethics committee is conducted. The amount of time until the investigation is done is unknown.

In Winona’s case, she ended up modeling for the very brand she stole from, Marc Jacobs. Eventually all was forgiven for Winona, but for a career diplomat caught committing theft there is a very slim possibility that he will be welcomed back to Argentina with open arms. While the ambassador has not been formally fired, this is proving to be an embarrassing and global ordeal.

Was the book worth all this trouble? The name of the alleged book stolen remains a mystery.
