The Outrageous Barriers to Democracy in America

Join publisher of Harper’s Magazine John R. MacArthur and journalist Tom Frank at the New York Society for Ethical Culture on Tuesday, December 4 for a discussion of the current election season, as well as whether President Obama’s first term has delivered on his promise of liberalism in America, and what progressives can expect now that President Obama has been reelected for a second term.  MacArthur and Frank will be joined by moderator Dr. Joseph Chuman for a vitally important conversation about the state of our democracy, and the obstructions that prevent any president from affecting truly progressive change..

In his new book, THE OUTRAGEOUS BARRIERS TO DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA, MacArthur argues that the American political system is rigged to keep the “mock” in “democracy,” explaining how this came to be, and what it means for the future of our country. Featuring case studies of candidates from Ned Lamont to Ralph Nader and taking a close look at the Chicago politics that spawned Barack Obama, MacArthur spares neither side of the political spectrum in a devastating exposé of the entrenched elites.
