In The Philosophy of Travel paintings, Ayad Sinawi has juxtaposed two extremes of experience — terror and beauty. The project was conceived as a poetic gesture grounded in the language of painting, with its physical accumulations and metaphysical hierarchies of meaning.
"As a little boy," Sinawi says, "I was fascinated by old grainy television documentaries about World War II. Perhaps not understanding the terrible implications of the images flickering before me, I perceived the dynamic energy and destructive purpose of organized conflict in terms of aesthetic seductions. The images of large bomber formations, seemingly immovable, yet at the same time kinetic, held for me a particular visceral appeal. That these grandly beautiful airborne formations at high altitude dispensed terror and destruction with objective efficiency was unimaginable in the mind of a child in his domestic safety."
Sinawi was born in Baghdad, but calls home somewhere between London, Vancouver, Cape Breton Island, and New York City.
