Experimental Geography
Radical Approaches to Landscape, Cartography, and Urbanism
February 20, 7pm
Get Lost Travel Books, San Francisco: 1825 Market Street, San Francisco, CA 94103
Over the past ten years, a disparate group of artists, cartographers, and geographers have been toying with the methods of geography. In this groundbreaking collection, the movement is termed "experimental geography" and the work runs gamut of contemporary practice today: bus tours through water-treatment centers, photographs of secret CIA prisons, and all kinds of maps. The collection explores the distinctions between geographical study and artistic experience of the earth, as well as the juncture where the two realms collide (and possibly make a new field altogether).
A slideshow presentation of the book by Daniel Tucker, contributor and editor of AREA (www.areachicago.org), will be followed by a discussion.
